Effect of Coulomb correlations on energy bands in ferromagnetic transition metals : Ni, Co and Fe

Abstract.

We present here the extension to the ferromagnetic case of the perturbation method (limited to second order in U/ W ; U : Coulomb integral, W : d bandwidth) previously developed for taking into account correlation effects in paramagnets. Within this model, we can calculate the modifications of the band structures of ferromagnetic Ni, Co and Fe, induced by these effects. A good agreement with « experimental » band structures (deduced from angle resolved photoemission data) is obtained for the following values of U : U = 2 eV for Ni, U = 1.5 eV for Co and U = 1 eV for Fe.
