Spin and orbital magnetism in Fe-Co and Co-Ni alloys.

Söderlind P, Eriksson O, Johansson B, Albers RC, Boring AM.

Abstract
The spin and orbital moments have been calculated for the ferromagnetic alloys of iron, cobalt and nickel. The electronic structure calculations consider Hund's three rules and the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA) is used in the calculation of the alloys. The total magnetic moment which is dominated by the spin contribution is well accounted for already in theory that neglects spin-orbit coupling and orbital polarization. To obtain orbital moments in agreement with experiment it is necessary to include orbital polarization in addition to the spin-orbit interaction.
